Changing Up Your Work Space

Sitting in an uncomfortable chair at a dull grey desk in front of a glaring screen can be one of the most depressing things we do.  Could it be that it’s time to change up our work environment a little?  Just by changing the scenery of, not to mention adding ergonomic comfort to, your work space can make a world of difference in terms of productivity and overall well-being.

  • Try standing at work. You don’t have to sit to work at a computer.  More and more office workers are trying out adjustable height desks so that they have the option to sit or stand at work.  For some, it’s a matter of preference- they just work better standing.  For others, standing feels better for their backs, necks, and shoulders.  For yet others, it’s a practical issue- collaborating with others is just easier when someone’s not hovering over your shoulder (who liked it when someone reads over their shoulder?).
  • Try using a keyboard tray.keyboard tray offers the same flexibility, but in conjunction with your existing desk.  It also frees up your desk top so you feel less cluttered.
  • Take breaks. It’s important to take regular breaks to stretch all your muscles.  Your eyes get tired, too, so take time to blink to rehydrate them.  To avoid eye strain, try to switch back and forth between computer and other types of work.  That way you’re not staring at a screen for hours on end.
  • Schedule a conference room. Sometimes just a break from the same four walls or tiny cubicle can serve us well in productivity.  Many workers opt to schedule a conference room so they can collaborate with others, or on the opposite extreme, get away from others!
  • Try a sound machine. Office noise can be a real drag, not to mention a huge time suck.  Sound machines provide noise coverage without bothering others.

So, if you find yourself bored, disengaged, or simply unproductive, try one or more of the above tips and see what happens.
