Small Spaces {Tips for Making the Most of it!}

Small Spaces

I posted last time about a few of my favorite small space maximizers.  In keeping with that theme, I thought I’d expand on small spaces by adding a few tips for making the most of them.  To tell you the truth, small spaces seem to be the story of my life.  Somehow we have added degrees and children to our family, but manage to downsize with every step.  We currently live in the UK, so I find myself in small flat and working from home, while my husband offices in 2 small space: his PhD office and his parish office.  Interestingly, we have never been happier or more efficient.  I think the latter has to do with making the most out of the little we have.  So, here are some tips for what has worked for us in our diverse, yet perenially small spaces.

Tips for Maximizing Productivity {& Ergonomics} in Small Spaces

Always keep ergonomics in mind.  Just because you have a small space doesn’t mean you have to feel cramped or uncomfortable.  In fact, by honoring ergonomic principles, you and your body feel less stress and strain and you can be more productive.
  • Embrace your space.  Instead of resenting your lack of footage, choose to have a good attitude about it, looking for ways to make it more comfortable for you.
  • Try a close and go desk- it has the ergonomic advantages of a more expensive desk without the cost.  Plus, you can fold it up when not in use.  I find this feature priceless.  My husband works in a church.  The church is lovely, but small enough that there is one room that serves as the staff office during the week and the Sunday school class room come Sunday.  Having the option to fold away desktops is wonderful.
  • Instead of investing money and space in an ergonomic chair, you can attach back support to your current chair.
  • Raise your screen- you can stack books, use an inexpensive riser, or even a mount for your iPad to keep your screen at eye level.
  • For better and more efficient typing, try a mini keyboard so you can keep your mouse right next to it and free up some desk space at the same time.
  • Try white noise like this free generator.
  • Finally, a small space feels less cramped if you keep clutter to a minimum and you take breaks to stretch out.

The key, once again, is to customize your space so that it works for you.  Not all of these tips will apply to you, but they may even inspire you to think of your own.
