The Advantages of Standing at an Ergonomic Desk

Sitting for hours on end at a desk tends to put a lot of strain on the back.  This stress on the back has drawn a lot of attention to how we position ourselves while working.  The overwhelming majority of workers sit.  This may seem like a no-brainer, but have you considered standing while working?

Advantages of Standing

  • Fewer back problems
  • Better focus and creativity
  • More Alert
  • Better collaboration
  • Less distraction
The last two advantages come as a surprise for many.  Let’s take a closer look at how workers experienced better collaboration and less distraction from standing to work.

Better Collaboration

Workers who stand at work report how much less awkward it was to share a screen with someone while you’re both standing.  That way you avoid the awkward lean over my shoulder and stare at my screen issue.  Plus, you talk face to face rather than staring up at the other person who is standing.

Less Distraction

When you take into account that fact that the average worker is distracted more than 2 hours every day, the largest time suck attributed to conversational distraction, this reasoning will make more sense.  Interestingly, workers also reported that when a colleague drops in and there’s nowhere to sit, they usually stay less time, equalling less intrusion on actual work.
Additionally, workers found themselves looking around for distraction less often when standing than when sitting in a cozy chair.  They were more apt to get work done while standing.

Now that we’re all ready to stand to work, let’s take a look at some sit or stand options, as well as some adjustable options.

Hopefully, with these great options, you can find the right sit or stand option to fit you and your needs!
