Going Green {Ergonomically}

Ergonomic Green

There’s a lot of hype about going green…so much so I almost gag sometimes.  However, as a mother and an inhabitant of this earth, I do feel obliged to “do my bit” and be as resourceful as possible.  The whole idea of going green is using what you already have more efficiently and therefore, more effectively.  So, here are some freebies for reworking your work station and habits to get more out of your day for less.
  • Organize your desk.  Get rid of clutter, being sure to recycle old papers and the like.  ;) A clearer work space will free you up to be more productive.
  • Take stretch breaks to relieve back and other aches and pains.
  • Give your eyes a break, too, to relieve eye strain.  Literally blink to restore moisture to your eyes.  Also, look away from your screen and focus on an object farther away to ease eye strain.
  • Keep your mouse and keyboard right next to each other for the sake of your hands and wrists.
  • Adjust your chair and desk if possible.  You should be able to sit comfortably (not slouching, not ramrod straight), close to your desk with your arms by your sides and your fingers hovered over the keyboard (not cocked or bent).

I will plug one green product that costs about $25: the Green Power Strip.  It’s an efficient and easy to use power strip that allows you to program a  primary plug that controls all the secondary plugs.  Therefore, when the primary plug shuts off, all the rest will, too.  For example, when you turn off your computer, there’s really no reason to keep your printer and fax machine on. The same is true for your TV, DVD player., and any other gaming machines, which you might otherwise leave on if it’s a couple extra buttons to push.  Instead of having to sht off individual machines, you can do it all with just one touch at work and/or at home.  The main perk is that this strip  helps you use less electricity and emit fewer carbon dioxide emissions.
