Avoiding Work-Related Injuries
Work-Related Injuries & Strains
Do you come home from work with sore shoulders or an aching back? Or maybe it’s your hands, wrists, and fingers that bear the brunt of a hard day’s work. You may blame your age or even your job, but usually it’s poor habits and bad posture, and possibly sub-par products. With just a few changes on your part, you may be able to kick all that pain goodbye.
One of the most important things you can do to avoid work-related problems is to cultivate new habits, such as sitting in a neutral position. That means you take effort to sit relatively straight and not to bend, cock, or angle any part of you at all, and certainly not awkwardly. This will take intentionality on your part. For instance, most people drop their heads to see their screens (especially laptops) which in turn places strain on their necks and even their eyes. You have to be purposeful to avoid this- an easy (and cheap!) solution, for example, is a monitor ryser which raises the screen to eye level.
Ergonomic Tools to Help You Avoid Injury
There are many helpful tools out there that help you stay in good ergonomic posture and keep you from straining yourself.
Ergonomic keyboards- Find the best fit for your hands and fingers as you type. Regardless of what you choose, it’s important to let your hands hover over the keys and to move them as a unit and not stretch one finger to reach a key.
Ergonomic mice- Most mice force you to twist your forearm to use it properly…which incidentally is not proper at all! Why not try ahandshake hold which is much more natural for your arm and wrist? Tip: Always keep your mouse directly next to your keyboard for the least amount of reaching and straining.
Let It Snow Bundle- A heated bundled package including a keyboard, mouse, and wrist rest. Warm fingers are happy fingers!
Falalala Bundle- A bundled package of a split keyboard for easy positioning of hands and wrists, a split wrist rest, and the Renaissance mouse, which has a joy stick hold.
