The Pros & Cons of Laptops
The Pros & Cons of Laptops
Laptops are wonderfully lightweight and portable, yet they carry a cost, at least ergonomically. When typing, it’s important to keep good ergonomic posture. That means not angling, straining, or cocking any part of your body while typing. Usually when people type on a laptop, at the very best they use it on a desk and drop their heads to see the screen. At worst, they pull it on the lap (hence the name), and strain their necks, shoulders, and wrists just to type in such an awkward position. Either way, you’re stuck with a touch pad for mousing. Some people love their touch pads, but if you’re like me, you’re not one of them. By the end of the day, my hands are cramped and my mind is frazzled by the hyper-sensitivity of this blessed invention.
Getting All the Pros {Minus the Cons}

- One thing you can do to improve your lap top experience is to dock it whenever you can. Of course you can use it on your lap when necessary, but whenever possible, try to put it up on a desk to relieve the strain on your body. This will help you not hunch your shoulders or hang your head to see the screen or type.
- Another option is to use a wireless mouse. You can dock your laptop and use the mouse on the desktop, and you can even mouse on the couch if you’re using it there. You have all the features of a mouse, but not the tangled mess.
- If you do decide to use your touch pad, try to alter the sensitivity of your touch pad, which might lessen any frustration you may be feeling. An easy way to do this is by installing a program that essentially turns off the mouse while you’re typing and won’t re-engage until it has been a second or so.
