Getting Organized in Small Spaces

Making a Do-able Resolution: Getting Organized One Step at a Time

A few weeks ago, we started making do-able resolutions for work, such as getting your desk in order, your equipment set up in a helpful, ergonomic way, and establishing a good filing system for your papers and your email messages.  Rather than make huge goals such as lose 100 pounds or quit smoking in one day (or even potty train you child in 2 days), why not start off with reasonable, healthy, and ultimately useful goals?  The result is that you feel better about your work and get it done more efficiently, not to mention ergonomically (ie with less discomfort and injury).

Making the Most Out of a Little

This week, it’s making the most out of a little because most of us don’t have cozy corner offices or oodles of space to carelessly put things.  Rather, we have to be quite strategic in our use of space so we get the most out of it without cramming it full and making us crazy!  here are a few little suggestions for making the most of your small space, but we’d love to hear from you!  if you have a small space, let us know how you’ve managed to make the most of it.

  • Space-saving ergo desks take advantage of wall space.

If it’s in the budget, try a smart, space-saving ergonomic desk.  It’s not that they’re crazy expensive, but a desk is an investment.  If you are in the market for one, make sure to get the best one for you.  Ergonomic desks are designed to not only provide ergonomic comfort and ease, but also to maximize space; usually this is achieved in a small footprint, but a tall frame.  Most ergonomic desks (and certainly anything you choose to buy!) should be adjustable and should also provide ample space for your equipment so that it’s all within reach.

  • If your actual desktop space is challenging, try a mini keyboard.  Minis chunk rarely used keys (such as number pads) and focus on the majors, thus producing a small keyboard that is sure to save space.
  • Use a keyboard tray.  A keyboard tray will completely remove the keyboard and mouse from your desktop, thereby freeing up that work space.
  • Try a sound machine.   Any open office or cubicle worker will tell you that noise is a problem that comes with the territory. Take control and cover it with soothing nature sounds.  It’s definitely better than listening to the sales guys.  Plus, you’re sure to make more of your time that way.

Again, please let us know how you deal with cramped space!
