Office Blitz Attack: Your Desktop

Go for the Blitz!

Last time we talked about doing a blitz attack on getting rid of clutter instead of just looking at it and bemoaning it. Just like when a manager tells his servers at a restaurant to get their clean towel as dirty as possible while cleaning or you tell your kids to get as many toys picked up in the next 5 minutes as possible, you’re choosing to get as much done as possible in a small amount of time. Focusing on one activity helps you release those bigger, more scattered worries so that you can actually accomplish something (rather than find yourself paralyzed in overwhelment).

Tips for How You Use Your Desk Space

Today we are looking at how we use desk space.  Regardless of what desk you have or whether you even like it, how you use the space is where we’re focusing.  Here are some tips for making the most of your work space in terms of ergonomic comfort and ease of use.

  • Adjust your chair so that your feet are flat on the ground and you should have good back support.  Your arms should be at a 90 degree angle, preferably sloping downwards with the use of a keyboard tray.  This position keeps your arms in a neutral position, thus eliminating any awkward cocking or bending of your wrists.
  • Center and pair your keyboard and mouse to prevent wrist/hand injury, such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and also is the most efficient use of your movements since they’re not as widespread.   Many people find that a left-handed keyboard helps them pull the mouse in closer to the keys that they are using since the number pad has been moved to the left.  Alternatively, a mini keyboard eliminates keys that are rarely used and also allows users to pull the mouse in nice and snug.
  • Your monitor should be raised to eye level and about 20 inches away.  Eliminate glare by adjusting as best you can.  In addition to these steps, take frequent breaks for your eyes to refocus and rehydrate so you avoid eye strain and headaches.

Minimizing the scope of your movements and centralizing them in a neutral position aides in avoiding injury and strain at work.  Many people find that ergonomic products, such as a keyboard tray or an ergonomic keyboard also helps you stay comfortable, avoid injury and strain, and also afford your the most efficient use of your time.
