Relieve Your Hand and Wrist Pain {Try a Wrist Splint}
Hand and wrist pain is a common complaint for anyone who spends more than a few minutes on a computer at a time. If you suffer from pain in your hands, wrists or forearms, this series of posts is for you. In this first post, we will look at finding quick relief from pain. In the following posts, we will look at the two main causes of this pain: your mouse and your keyboard.
Tips for fast relief from pain:
- Apply hot or cold packs. Ice, or cold compresses, will quickly reduce any inflammation in the wrists and hands, and slightly numb the pain. Ice should not be placed directly to the skin; instead; wrap it in a towel or napkin. You can also try anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen that can quickly relieve pain. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first for safe use of medication.
Try a wrist splint. Wrist splints are perfect if your pain is caused by flexing or overworking your wrist. Find one that comfortably holds your hand and wrist in a straight and flat position, never bent or flexed. Most people find night to be the most effective time to use a splint; it is common for wrists to be unknowingly bent awkwardly while sleeping, pinching the median nerve.- Fix your hand and wrist posture. While typing, your hands and wrists should be relaxed, not flexed or stressed. You hands, wrists and arms should be level with one another, not held up or flexed back. They should also for a straight line from your elbow through your middle finger, never bent to the side. Make sure all hand movement comes from the elbow, not by bending your wrist.
- Upgrade to an ergonomic keyboard. Ergonomic keyboards are specially designed to encourage good hand and wrist posture. An ergonomic mouse, such as one with a track ball, can reduce the strain caused by holding too small an item. Sample several styles and sizes of keyboards and mice to find one that best fits your hands.
Pain in your wrists and hands can be quickly relieved with these easy tips. A wrist splint can stop the muscle strain and relax the muscles giving them time to heal. You can prevent future pain by using an ergonomic keyboard and an ergonomic mouse designed to help you maintain good hand and wrist posture. Don’t just ignore or tolerate your pain; take action to find the relief you need.
