How to Make Your Workstation Ergonomic
Working in an ergonomic workstation is essential for health, productivity, and efficiency no matter what your job. Whether you’re a 9-5 cubicle dweller, a professional blogger, a gamer, work-from-homer, or even a student, having the right and best resources can transform an unproductive work space to a haven of get-it-done!
Case in point- one reader sent in a photo of the many changes he made to make his graduate student office more ergonomic. He splits his time between studying/writing for his PhD, working a part-time job, and his family, so making the most of every minute is his top priority. However, this guy is paying student loans, so he can’t afford to make super-expensive changes.

- First, he docked and elevated his laptop. Since this guy does so much reading, writing, and typing, he needed the better reading level of an elevated screen.
- Second, he plugged in an extra monitor and an ergonomic keyboard for even more reading and typing comfort. He chose a Microsoft keyboard with slight curvature.
- Next, our reader added a wrist rest for breaks between typing periods and upgraded to an ergonomic mouse complete with a mouse pad with a built-in wrist rest.
- You’ll also notice that our avid reader has not one, but two document holders for all the texts and notes he has to reference throughout the day.
- Since this cubby hole of an office is not very bright, he added two small lights, but not right on the monitors- no reason to create glare where it doesn’t need to be!
- Not pictured, our reader also uses a foot rest for comfort so he can rest his feet comfortably.
- One last thing to note- we mentioned that our guy did not have tons of extra cash- so he picked and chose what changes would really make a difference in his office. Those items tended to be desk top and efficiency-driven, but are actually a variety of brands.
When upgrading your work station, note that brands are not nearly as important ergonomic quality. The most important and efficiency-boosting ergonomic upgrades you can make are an ergonomic keyboard and ergonomic mouse.
