So, just to sum up:

  • sitting more than 6+ hours a day increases risk of death up to 40%…even if you exercise!!
  • obese people tend to sit between 2 and 3 hours more than thinner folks {obesity has doubled 20 years…the same years that internet and gaming exploded}
  • chewing gum burns more calories than sitting
  • people who sit for work have twice the rate of cardiovascular disease than those who stand for work

Fortunately, this dire poster doesn’t exist to look cool and scare us out of our chairs….well, it does aim to scare us out of chairs, but it does so with a few suggestions for work, such as standing to stretch, walking in place, or doing jumping jacks every so often.  However, I would like to throw a suggestion into the mix- ergonomic experts have known for a while what a toll sitting for long periods of time takes on the body and especially the back.  As a result, they designed adjustable height desks, such as a sit or stand desk, which takes into account how hard sitting is on your body and thus provides an alternative- standing!  Knowing that it’s hard to sustain a standing position all day, an adjustable height desk can be adjusted to easily accommodate either a sitting or standing work position.  Those who have tried this kind of desk have reported back passionately about the results: many workers have reported fewer back problems, better team collaboration, better circulation, and since they’re all alive, sustained life.
