Everyone wants to get more out of their day, but it takes a plan and discipline to make it happen. Don’t lose hours of work to distractions. Try these very practical tips to reduce distractions and improve your productivity.

Fix your posture. Do you know how much energy is wasted through poor posture? A neutral typing posture minimizes the work for your muscles and eliminates the sore muscles that drain time and energy. An ergonomic chair, that is adjusted to fit your body, can help support good posture for the entire day. To customize your chair, begin with the height; lower it until your feet rest firmly on the floor. Secondly, move your back rest for the best fit and recline your seat slightly. You can also add portable lumbar support for better back comfort. Finally, make sure you have free movement of your elbows while typing.

Eliminate distractions. The average office worker loses more than two hours a day because of distractions, including interruptions, phone calls, e-mail and office noise. Pay attention to what distracts you, and find a way to block it. Try using a personal white noise machine to cover conversations and surrounding noises. You can also reduce how frequently you check email to only once or twice a day. Don’t let low priority tasks like email constantly interrupt you and consume your time.

Warm-up for work. Arrive a few minutes early to mentally prepare for your day. Prioritize your to-do list and work on the most important tasks first. Try to accomplish some of your two high-priority work before opening email or picking up your phone. And as you wrap up your day, spend a few minutes preparing for the next day. Clean off your desk, and lay out the tasks for the morning.

Stand up! Did you know that simply standing up can boost your thinking power? According to a recent study at USC, standing up can increase brain function by 5% to 20%. Take a break and walk around to increase blood circulation. Try standing up while making phone calls. Better yet, try a sit-or-stand ergonomic desk that attaches to your current work surface and elevates your monitor, keyboard and mouse in one, easy move.

Upgrade your keyboard. Did you know that poor typing posture actually wastes time, in addition to muscle energy? Ergonomic keyboards are specially designed to support good hand position and make typing more efficient and more comfortable. Consider trying a mini keyboard with a compact design that decreases the effort of each keystroke. When looking at a new keyboard, try several different designs to fine one that fits your hands and style.

Good habits and supportive ergonomic tools increase your productivity. Start by maintaining good posture at your computer with a properly-adjusted ergonomic chair. Also, try standing for part of your day with an adjustable-height ergonomic desk. Making the effort to try new tools and create better work habits can help you squeeze the most out of every day.

Are headaches a normal part of your work day? Many people experience headaches during the day or the way home from work. Although headaches have numerous causes, there are a few typical office “fixes” that can help with work-induced headaches. Computer headaches can often be traced to eye stain and muscle tension in the neck and shoulders. In this article, we will look at neck and shoulder tension; a follow-up post will address eye strain.

Tips to reduce neck and shoulder tension, and prevent work-induced headaches:

Adjust Your Computer Screen: Make sure your monitor is immediately in front of you, centered on your body. When sitting back, relaxed in your chair, your screen should be about 15 to 25 inches away from your eyes; find a good distance that allows your eyes to read easily. Lastly, your monitor should sit up at eye level; a monitor or desk riser can add the necessary height to prevent looking up or down at your screen. Craning your neck to the side, or holding it up or down causes strain in your shoulders and neck, overworking these muscle groups.

Use a document holder: If you frequently look down at a document or notepad while typing, this can strain the muscles in your neck, and shoulders. It also forces your eyes to constantly focus and refocus on your document, then on your monitor. A document holder moves your notes to a better location. Place your document holder as close to you monitor as possible to lower the need for your eyes to refocus and constant movement or strain of the neck muscles.

Correct your posture: Maintaining a neutral posture while sitting at your computer will minimize any strain on your muscles. First, make sure your chair is properly adjusted and that you have enough lumbar support for your lower back. Next, make sure your keyboard is in the proper place. Try an adjustable keyboard tray to move your keyboard about two inches above your lap. If you find you are tensing your shoulders, you may have your armrests or your keyboard too high to type while relaxed.

Take frequent breaks: Stop and stretch your muscles; move around to get your heart rate up a little. If you feel like your day doesn’t permit enough breaks, try standing up while you return phone calls. Even just a minute or two can help prevent strain.

Headaches are frustrating and, for many they significantly impact your home life. Tension in your shoulders and neck can often be the cause. Adding helpful tools, such as a monitor or desk riser or a document holder, can eliminate the overuse and strain of the muscles in your neck and shoulders. Making a few small changes can help you fight the headaches and help you relax at work.

If you sit in a neutral typing posture, you can achieve the absolute minimum strain on all your muscles. Habits of good posture always begin with your chair. A good, ergonomic chair is specially designed to help you maintain good posture throughout the day long. Most ergonomic chairs allow for very specific adjustment to fit your body. Start by moving the back rest to best fit the curve of your spine. And make sure any your chair has enough lower back support, or use additional lumbar support can help. Lower your chair until your feet rest firmly on the floor to provide minimum pressure on your back.

Ergonomic Desk – There are many different kinds of ergonomic desks, but for back injuries, many people prefer the flexibility of an adjustable height ergonomic desk. These desks give you the flexibility to sit or stand at your computer while maintaining good ergonomic posture. In a recent study at Cornell University, people who had the option of sitting or standing at their computer, reported less discomfort, especially for people with back injuries. Even if you do not have a specific injury, changing positions between sitting and standing can relieve up to 20% of musculoskeletal pain.

Ergonomic Workspace – Making your workspace more ergonomic untilized the best tools to elminiate stress and strain on your body. Here are some options that may further help you. Start by using an adjustable keyboard tray to optimize the placement of your keyboard and mouse. This simple tool is inexpensive and easy to install, but provides an enormous advantage for maintaining good posture. It allow you to quickly move the keyboard and mouse one or two inches above your legs, just below your elbow height. This position relaxes your arms, shoulders and back.

Next, your monitor should be at eye-level, straight ahead of you so that you never slouch or lean for better viewing. You may need a monitor or desk lift to elevate your screen appropriately.

Finally, consider upgrading to an ergonomic keyboard. Try out several keyboards to find one the fits your hand shape, supports your good posture and elminated extra stretching and muscle tension. A left-handed keyboard and a mini keyboard move the mouse closer by both shifting the number pad to the left side, making easier use your mouse. A split keyboard design is provides a slight curve to reinforce good hand and arm position.

Back pain can be frustrating and very debilitating. In addition to learning how to control the pain, evaluate your posture and work space minimize any muscle strain.

Left handed keyboards were designed to provide left handed typists with a more ergonomic, comfortable keyboard. The key placement, besides the standard QWERTY keys, are the mirror image of a right handed keyboard, with the number pad and other function keys on the left side of the keyboard.

If you are part of the 90% of people who are right handed, you may have never considered how a left handed keyboard could benefit you in your daily computer time. However, there are several benefits of a left handed keyboard that would help right handed users work more comfortably and efficiently.

The Universal Benefits of a Left Handed Keyboard

Ergonomics: To provide maximum comfort while typing, the goal is to maintain a neutral typing posture. When sitting correctly, your hands and wrists should always remain straight and flat, and your elbow should be closer to your body. The closer your mouse is to the center of your body, the easier it is to keep your wrist straight and the more efficiently you can use your mouse. The left handed keyboard is ideal to bring the mouse closer because the number pad and other function keys have been moved from the right to the left side of the keyboard.

Productivity: Another incredible benefit of the left handed keyboard is the ability to multi-task by using the number pad and mouse simultaneously. Instead of moving back and forth between the number pad and the mouse, you can use the number pad to enter data, while keeping your right hand on the mouse to move the cursor to a new entry location. This can be especially beneficial for data entry and filling out numeric spreadsheets.

Gaming: For anyone who spends a good amount of time playing games on the computer, they may find significant gaming benefits from a left handed keyboard. If the game function requires simultaneous action such as moving and shooting, this is normally accomplished with both the number pad and the mouse. Using a left handed keyboard, the gamer can easily use the number pad directly under his left hand and the mouse located near the right hand. Many gamers find this function more comfortable and efficient.

There are many benefits provided by a left handed keyboard for both right and left handed users. Try out an ergonomic left handed keyboard to discover for yourself the increased comfort of the new mouse location and the ergonomic design. You can also increase your productivity by using your mouse and your numeric keys at the same time.

Work-Related Stress

If you frequently worry about work, obsess about details, question your value or that of your co-workers’, chances are you are experiencing work-related stress. While it’s normal to fret about things here and there, and it’s probably even expected of you to problem solve and work well with others, that doesn’t mean it’s easy to do.

Take a look at the following tips for managing stress at work.

Managing Stress

If your stress primarily revolves around people, it may be to your benefit to deal with it head-on. That doesn’t mean you have to be confrontational or overly aggressive, but it’s possible that your co-workers or boss have no idea you are feeling this way. Take time to have a pleasant, non-offensive conversation that seeks reconciliation and solutions over being justified or “right.”

If your stress if more with yourself and your own expectations, try taking breaks and evaluating the cause of your stress. Chances are, you need to set more realistic goals, even if you set goals on a daily basis.

If your stress is a result of office noise, you can try sound masking or more localized white noise, like this free generator. Sound masking is more of an office-wide solution, whereas a generator is an individual desktop solution.

It’s also possible that your workstation is not as comfortable, not to mention ergonomic, as possible. When your workstation isn’t up to par, neither is your own health or productivity. Take time to review a good workstation check list.

One last option are online games to relieve stress. Not I don’t mean to suggest that you should bring in Wii or a Play Station, but a simple game of solitaire often helps you blow off steam in a healthy way.

Oh, ________. It’s time for school!

How did you fill in the blank? Hopefully not with any choice words. I was actually thinking, “yea” if you can believe it. For some, the start of a new school year is exhilirating, while for others, it’s just another thing to survive. I taught high school Spanish, and my first year was definitely the latter, though with some planning and thinking ahead, I learned to anticipate each new year with fresh enthusiasm. I think a major part of this shift in my attitude was planning ahead and trying to foresee any likely problems or glitches. With some planning and a few tips, I truly believe any educator can shake the stress and fear of a new class (or classes) so they can enjoy a wonderful year.

Before you even start the week, have that week’s worth of lesson planning done and all copies made by Monday morning.

I know it sounds impossible, but if you’ll push yourself at the beginning of the year, when you’re fresher, you’ll be able to get ahead of schedule. This places more than the proverbial 2 steps ahead of the kids and affords you the opportunity to schedule assignments and assessments purposefully, while still allowing room to flex.

Thus, the goal is to find the right pacing for you and for your class. If you over-plan, you’ll get too rigid and have trouble flexing for reteach time. On the flip side, if you go day-by-day, it’s possible to run out of activities or lessons and find yourself twiddling your thumbs in front of 20 or 30 pairs of eyes.

Set your classroom up for optimal learning.

Position your desk in a way that you can sit at it and still see what’s going on.

Position the students. Remember that kids are kids- be intentional in how you arrange their desks/chairs. Whether you opt for rows, groupings, or even 2 sides facing each other, think through how much lecturing you will be doing. If a lot, it may be wise to place them in rows, facing the front. If there will be guided discussion or student debates, etc., it may be smarter to have them angled off the front where they can each other, but aren’t too distracted.

Have a table at the front, easily accessible, where you can keep copies and anything you need during the day. (Make sure not to leave quiz and/or test papers out as a free-for-all, though!)

Position yourself. Again you’ll need to think through how you’ll be teaching, but most effective teachers command the classroom by presenting well-prepared information and an interesting format. One way to manage this is to try a mobile stand, or some sort of desktop that allows you to teach from any place in the classroom. Presentation keyboards allow you to present lessons from any point in the classroom- even next to the 2 talkers who won’t be quiet unless you’re right next to them!

Set up your own ergonomic workspace.

Clear the clutter for 2 reasons: 1) You lose credibility when you look disorganized and can’t find something. 2) The less junk you have cluttering your desk, the less distracted, and conversely, the more focused on your students you’ll be.

Practice good ergonomics. Keep your keyboard and mouse on the same surface and next to each other. A keyboard tray is ideal for freeing up desk space and also maintaining a good neutral posture. An ergonomic keyboard and/or mouse also make for more efficient and more comfortable typing.

If you type from notes frequently, consider a document holder to keep them at eye level, thus reducing eye strain.

With the digital society we live with today, it has become quite commonplace for people to log on at some point throughout the day. It has become commonplace to interact with a keyboard and terminal at some point on a daily basis and if you are working, chances are you encounter this situation for hours on end.

The more often we use our terminals the greater the risk of repetitive stress related injuries happening to our hands and wrists. Although leisurely use will likely spare you the condition, frequent use has become synonymous with work and communication.

This is where ergonomic keyboards come in. Ergonomic keyboards are designed to reduce the repetitive stress suffered by the wrist and joints during long sessions with the keyboard. They are designed in such a way that the rotation of the wrists is reduced to a degree that it alleviates if not solves any painful swelling in the joints normally seen after long marathon sessions in front of a computer.

Though they come in all shapes and sizes, ergonomic keyboards all have one standard feature. They are usually always anti RSI compliant. This means that no matter how weirdly shaped, or sized they are, they are designed specifically to help reduce repetitive stress injuries. There are even mini keyboards that are engineered with ergonomics as its top priority.

When you can reduce or prevent the onset of pain caused by old clunky keyboards, you can become more efficient. By having your workspace and keyboard work with you and not against you, you can increase your output while decreasing the risk of RSI making work a pleasurable experience especially with the right tools.

Repetitive stress related injuries are a serious matter; ergonomic keyboards can help alleviate and prevent the onset of pain.Your tools must work for you and not against you and working can become a highly productive and enjoyable experience.

If at first try, you do not find the ergonomic keyboard you need, do not readily give up because there are several designs out in the market that is right for your work. Just make sure you know what you need so as to avoid not getting the desired outcome from keyboards you purchase.

Ergonomic keyboards can increase your productivity dramatically by making your workspace friendlier to your wrists. They all have one defining feature and that is that they are all anti RSI compliant. This means that no matter how weird or crazy they are they are made to reduce repetitive motions which cause RSI even for mini keyboards so you are sure of maximum convenience!

The continuous evolution of the human civilization has enabled us to exert the minimal amount of effort in going through our daily chores. Whatever industry we may be in, there is a computer waiting for us, to do our bidding with a stroke of a key and click of the mouse. From start-up companies to fulfilled corporations, majority of offices in the world have at least one of these electronic brains. Without a doubt, computers have become indispensable for mankind.

Unfortunately, a breakthrough comes with a drawback. Repetitive use of these machines can cause various disorders in our body. Among the ordinary discomforts that computer users get are the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), and shoulders and back aches. CTS is a painful condition caused by increased pressure on specific nerves of the wrist. Repeated hand movements cause inflammation of the wrist nerves. Even a little pressure on this area will cause discomfort.

The layout of regular keyboards forces users to work for long periods of time in an uncomfortable position. The hands and wrists are in an angle that goes against their natural stance, causing strained muscles and nerves. The arms and the shoulders get strained, as well. This awkward angle of the arms aggravates the muscles on the shoulders and back, causing occasional but severe pains.

Many therapists advise the use of ergonomic keyboards, which are curved in shape, adapting to the normal angle of the hands and wrists. The letter keys on an ergonomic keyboard are angled as well, so the user can relax his wrists without decreasing his typing speed. The elevated angle of the keyboard itself enables the user to work while maintaining the natural position of the arms and wrists.

Ergonomic keyboards are specially designed to alleviate stress on the hands and wrists due to typing. There are many types of ergonomic keyboards out in the market. Aside from the angled layout, some even come with a soft pad on the edge of the keyboard where the user can rest the base of his hand, making computer works a breeze.

One of the most popular types of ergonomic keyboards is the split keyboard, which is literally split in the middle to create an angular layout of the keys. The wider angle of the letter keys lets the user type with a more natural positioning of his hands and wrists.

Another popular type is the trackball keyboard. It is actually a standard layout keyboard, but the built-in trackball gives the user a secondary pointing device. This type of keyboard enables the user to point and click without removing his hands from the keyboard. Trackball keyboards are suitable for users whose tasks require excessive use of the mouse, maintaining the hands’ natural position.

The development of science and technology is a vicious cycle. While it provides us with tools that make our lives easier, it also brings different health hazards that may cause long-term discomfort. And then further developments will produce new devices that will eliminate those inconveniences. And so on. The good thing is, we never stop finding ways to life easier.

Many people experience carpal tunnel syndrome and shoulder and back pain due to prolonged and repetitive use of the computer. Fortunately, ergonomic keyboards have been developed to prevent and eliminate these discomforts. This kind of keyboard is available in the market with different variations: the split-type, trackball keyboard, and touchpad keyboard among many others. These keyboards may differ aesthetically, but all of them relieve the strain on the hands and wrists caused by standard keyboards.
